About us

null

Human Interaction Systems (HumInSys) may be a start-up, but the company’s vision as well as its strategy for developing ground-breaking software long pre-date its incorporation. Upon founding the company, we succeeded in building an extraordinary team composed of doctors and engineers in the areas of Behaviour Analysis, Cognitive Ergonomics and Interaction Engineering. The company and its team are committed to ‘thinking outside of the box’ in order to bring disruptive innovation to companies in high-risk industries such as aeronautics and aerospace, rail and energy.

Grounded in years of research and projects involving human-computer interactions, HumInSys started by looking at potential synergies with simulation-based training for Complex Dynamic Systems. We determined that the development of technology for analysing cognitive processes could assist Instructors in the delivery of training and significantly improve the value and impact of such training approaches. By layering solutions, based on our understanding of the impact of human reliability factors on performance, onto simulator-based training systems, our goal is to improve risk management by reliably predicting and/or guiding future human behavior.

SFA

stress and fatigue assessment
null

SFA (stress and fatigue assessment) is an internal code name for our software prototype for evaluating human performance and the predisposition to error through the lens of stress and fatigue. Designed for professionals working in high-stress environments such as aeronautics, SFA studies the impact of stress and/or fatigue on non-technical core competencies such as situation analysis and decision-making.

Today, instruction and continuing training in high-stress environments such as air transportation and defense are frequently delivered via simulation-based training. SFA adds an essential layer to the simulation training method by analyzing and interpreting data acquired through automated facial recognition and cardiac frequency sensors to determine stress and fatigue levels of the trainee. The analysis occurs both in real-time mode (simulation phase) and replay mode (debrief phase) and supports the Instructor who can then tailor the training to each individual trainee.

Specifically, the facial recognition system, based on deep learning, will use night vision IP cameras.  Using video as the output display, it will be possible to extract facial geometric features where each movement is broken down into action (muscle) units. Aggregated into a Multiple Action Unit ‘view’, it will be possible for the Instructor to rapidly and accurately assess trainee stress levels by analyzing output data on micro variations.

The cardiac frequency system will be based on the remote estimation of a trainee’s heart rate while in front of a camera. This will be achieved by detecting subtle changes of facial colors, invisible to the naked eye, as blood circulates through the body. By viewing heart rate variations as well as other data generated by SFA, the Instructor will be able to rapidly and accurately assess trainee fatigue levels.

SFA is being designed to deliver significant benefits in the area of simulation-based training:

01.

Improve the quality and precision of data Instructors use in assessing trainee performance.

02.

Facilitate the customisation of training to meet training center as well as individual trainee needs.

03.

Decrease overall training time and optimize training content.

HFA

human factor assessment
null

HFA (human factor assessment) is our internal code name for technology currently under development which builds on the analytical capabilities available in SFA. It will deliver a complete HCI platform for use in simulation-based training. In addition to the analysis of stress and fatigue as human factors affecting performance, HFA will be able to identify and observe multimodal cognitive processes performed during training sessions as well as understand the various factors that lead to cognitive overload experienced by the trainee.

Using data sourced from existing as well as new sensors, HFA will be able to produce and display high-level information the Instructor can use to effectively interpret the technical and non-technical skills of a trainee. From a software architecture perspective, diverse inputs (operator actions, audio communications, facial expressions and eye behavior) are uploaded into a multimodal database and then analysed by HFA’s advanced algorithms to establish an association between schema and structured sequences concerning core competencies.

The current design of HFA includes four dynamic Models:

null

Activity Identification & Analysis

input from the Operations Manual and Experts is used to develop guidelines for analyzing trainee performance of designated activities.
null

Task Evaluation

a Standard Tasks Repository is transformed into a set of Criteria & Evaluation Grids.
null

Behaviour & Capability Interpretation

activity-specific Sensors and Flow Synchronization data are acquired, recorded, normalized, synchronized and then uploaded to the interpretation engine.
null

Representation

the results are presented on the HCI Display in both real-time and recorded/replay modes.

Leveraging the benefits noted above for SFA in the area of simulation-based training, HFA will treat a broader array of analysis points, improve their visual representation and add the notion of time-line traceability for monitored elements. The enhancements planned in HFA offer multiple advantages:

01.

Address the requirements of a more demanding segment of the market.

02.

Empower Instructors to take a more holistic approach to training.

03.

Deliver a set of real criteria and data making performance analysis an objective rather than subjective process.

04.

Strengthen links between human factors and core competencies to better manage risk.

Consulting

null

What we do

Our consultants work with companies in the co-design of production control and monitoring systems, or in the modification of existing systems, so that operators will be better able to master their complexity. It is a true collaboration as our consulting experts in human reliability and technology work as a team with operational managers from within the company.

Background

Operators responsible for oversight of production sites face enormous challenges. They are expected to master increasingly complex environments defined by an expanding geographic range of installations, a multiplication of processes and a need to take into account constraints imposed by production management. Furthermore, in light of the cost of the systems involved, senior management typically seeks a rapid return on investment, placing operators on a fast and steep learning curve.

Approach

To maximize investments in technology and/or to improve performance, it is important to have a razor-sharp focus on future operators and what is expected of them from the design phase through to when the system goes live. It is equally important to take a holistic approach to decision-making while taking into account the nature of the tasks to be accomplished, the characteristics of the tools to be implemented and the real ways in which users interact and work is organized. Our consultants rely on a combination of experience gained from similar projects, deep understanding of how human operators function alone or in groups and know-how in pluri-disciplinary cooperation.

Special focus

The first area in which our scientific and technical expertise is being applied is simulation-based training for operators. Mastery of these environments is necessary to optimize the career path and performance of operators which is of strategic importance to companies. Given the complexity, costs and stakes involved, the approach to understanding processes undertaken by operators must rely on the collection of robust data and their intelligent analysis. Accepting the challenge, we have focused our first development initiative on the training of civilian and military pilots.  Specifically, we have designed a platform for collecting, modeling using AI algorithms and analyzing human-computer interaction data in order to assess levels of stress and fatigue in pilots.

The goal

To lessen the risk of potential operational difficulties which could undermine the profitability or reliability of systems and tools as operators get up to speed in mastering these complex systems.
